Last Monday, we had a big raining day! My second son and I went to the church after his school. I took him to the room where he had an important appointment. It was for Baptism preparation before Easter day (April 20, 2014). What an exciting! While he was in the room, he was doing the video interview for the baptism. I sat on a chair, waiting for him. I thought about something special about being a good mother. As a mother, I questioned myself, “how can I tell if I’m doing a good job as a mother?” Well, that’s really good question.
Three things that you should know about your doing a good job as a mother.
1. Remember God always knows what’s best for your children.
Sometimes, your children confuse you, disappoint you, or even annoy you. You wonder about the best possible way to handle emotional moods.. academic challenges.. developmental issues.. and discipline.
You want so badly to rear your children who will love God and serve their neighbors. But surely, you may sometimes feel insufficient to the task.
But no matter how much in the dark you may feel about what’s best for your children, God knows. Nothing about your children is hidden from Him. Even before they were born, God had written their every days in His book (Psalm 139:15, 16).
With the heavenly Father involved in your parenting, you can relax and be assured He will use your faithful efforts to do what’s best for your children.
“Jesus increased in wisdom and statue, and in favor with God and men.” – Luke 2:52
2. Teach your children who they really belong to.
Mounting piles of diapers, socks, and underwear. Flute lessons. Staying up all night with a newborn – or- waiting for a rebellious teen to come home. Scout meetings: Sunday School and church activities. Bake sales that are announced at the last minute. All of these things stack up to an awful lot for moms to do. It’s no wonder they get tired!
When you are feeling overwhelmed with things to do , this passage offers relief. It states some straightforward ways you can tell if you are being a godly mom.
- Don’t be hard on your kids. That means not taking your stress or busyness out on them.
- Raise them properly. You can raise your kids to be kind to others: provide for their physical needs (such as food, clothing, shelter, etc), their emotional needs (for love and discipline), their mental needs (for schooling), and most of all for their spiritual needs (where they are heading for eternity).
- Teach them and instruct them about the Lord. Take them to Sunday school and church. Read Bible stories to them at home. And, above all, live out the truths of Scripture in your daily life!
“You, fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath, but bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord.” – Ephesians 6:4
One of parenting’s biggest challenges is finding the balance between being tough and being loving. You know you need to love your children unconditionally, and you know you need to discipline them when they do something wrong. but loving your kids is usually a lot easier than disciplining them.
SO how can parents find the balance between thought and tender? Look to God for a beautiful example of a loving parent who also gently corrects his children when they make mistakes. God corrects us because He loves us. God wants us to learn the right way of doing things so we can live the life He wants for us.
You can do the same with your children. When you think of discipline as a way of guiding them, it no longer clashes with your desire to show them love. Gentle correction and loving guidance are crucial parts of good parenting.
“For whom the Lord loves He chastens, and scourges every son whom He receives.” – Hebrews 12:6
Lastly, you are a mother and you are doing a good job always! Remember, you are doing what’s best for your children, the Lord are taking care of you and your children no matter how would happen. Do not forget that the Lord loves you and your children.
